Upload a Budget with Dimension Detail in Dynamics 365 Business Central
In Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, you have the opportunity to create multiple budgets and copy, import or export budgets. Many times, clients want to show the breakout between the different dimensions for that total budget amounts.
In this example, we will upload a departmental budget for the entire year. Department is set as Global Dimension at the Demo company. Here’s how.
Create a Budget
Type “GL Budgets” in the Dynamics 365 Business Central search bar. Click “New.”
Enter Name, Description and any dimensions that are applicable as shown below.
Process- Edit Budget
The easiest way to upload dimension budget information is to upload the budget for a specific dimension. I have chosen to have the G/L accounts as lines and periods as columns so I can work on the entire year budget at once for all departments. I’ve made the selections to start my budget on 01/01/2022 for 12 periods. I will also include the DEPARTMENT as the column dimensions.
Next, I will choose Process-Export to excel.
My excel template has now been created for me. I just need to populate the budget amounts for each account per period for all departments and Import update Budget in Excel back to BC.

- G/L Account Balance Budget by Period
- Trial Balance/Budget
- G/L Account Balance/Budget
- Accounts Schedules with Actual via Budget Amount and Variances
